Coins With A Connection To Jesus

A conversation with my friend Wes inspired this post. Below are three coins from my collection that are thought to have had a connection to Jesus.

Emperor Tiberius

Tiberius

Jesus, referring to a “penny” asked, “Whose is this image and superscription?” When told it was Caesar, He said, ‘’Render therefore unto Caesar the things which are Caesar’s and unto God the things that are God’s” (Matthew 22:20-21). Since Tiberius was Caesar at the time, this denarius type is attributed by scholars as the “penny” referred to in the Bible. -Forum Ancient Coins.

Pontius Pilate

Pontius Pilate

Roman Governor of Judea under Tiberius.

Widow’s Mite

Widow's Mite

Jesus sat down opposite the place where the offerings were put and watched the crowd putting their money into the temple treasury. Many rich people threw in large amounts. But a poor widow came and put in two very small copper coins, worth only a fraction of a penny. Calling his disciples to him, Jesus said, “I tell you the truth, this poor widow put more into the treasury than all the others. For all of them have contributed out of their abundance; but she out of her poverty has put in everything she had, all she had to live on.” - Forum Ancient Coins.
