Pieces of Time - The Ancient Coins Podcast

This is pretty cool, a podcast for ancient coins. Podcast number two had an interview with Wayne Sayles. If you haven’t seen it yet, check out Pieces of Time.

Gordian III

This is a coin of the emperor Gordian III, who ruled from 238 to 244 AD. The coin is a sestertius and it’s the first sestertius in my collection.

I recently added a link to this site on the links page. For those of you who have not seen it, it is definitely worth a visit. James (the webmaster) has done a tremendous job.

P. Satrienus

I just added this nicely toned silver denarius to the gallery.

It is from 77 BC. and was minted by Publius Satrienus. Click the thumbnail for a larger image and attribution.

Update: This coin has turned out to be a fake.

Agathokles

Agathokles was the tyrant of Syracuse from 317-289 BC. and the king of Sicily from 304-289 BC.

On the obverse is the goddess Artemis, goddess of the hunt. Artemis was the equivalent of the Roman goddess Diana.

On the reverse is a “winged thunderbolt”.

Washington on the Tiber

An interesting article comparing Washington to ancient Rome, just in time for the Fourth of July.
