Eutropius

Book VIII is done.

Lucius Verus Denarius.

Lucius Verus was co-emperor with Marcus Aurelius from 161 AD until 169 AD, when Verus died. After his death, Aurelius ruled alone until his own death. They had been adopted by Antoninus Pius and had succeeded him.

300

I posted a while ago on the movie three hundred. I saw it tonight and I liked it. If you are a historical purist, squeamish, or overly pc, you probably won’t like it though. Everything is kind of exaggerated and some things are outright made up but the basic plot is factual. It’s based on Frank Miller’s graphic novel, not a history textbook. I thought it was visually stunning and it was really nice to not have big stars in the movie. Just my 2 cents.

Two new coins.

I justed added two bronze coins to the gallery. They are coins of the emperors Constantius II and Constans. When their father, Constantine the Great, died in 337 AD, his three sons took over as emperors. Their brother, Constantine II, was the third emperor. Artistic Recreations

Scott from Scotvs Capitis blog has done some pretty impressive work adding color to images of coins and statues. It’s definitely worth a look.

Small silver coin from Thrace, Cherronesos

My third coin of this type showed up today. It’s a small and very ancient silver coin from around 400 BC. The denomination is a hemidrachm. The dealer thought it might be unlisted but I’m not sure exactly why. For a larger image and attribution, please click on the thumbnail.
